At DDW 2007, 13 scientific abstracts were presented that are related to clinical trials conducted with the HALO
ablation systems over the past 4 years. These presentations further add to a growing body of evidence and
experience for this intervention in treating a patient with Barrett's esophagus.
The following is a selected summary of the presentations:
-
Long-term (2.5 years) follow-up results of the AIM Trial (Ablation of Intestinal Metaplasia) was reported for the first time. The 1-year follow-up results were
recently published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in which 70% of patients demonstrated complete histological resolution of all IM after treatment with the HALO360
device. After adding the HALO90 focal ablation device to the treatment protocol and extending the study follow-up to 2.5-years, the complete response rate has
increased to 98.4%11,12
-
A study showing that ablation with the HALO System for Barrett's containing HGD +/- early cancer eradicated all baseline genetic abnormalities20
-
A cost-effectiveness analysis comparing a surveillance strategy versus ablation for Barrett's containing LGD demonstrated superiority of the ablation strategy21
-
A U.S. HGD Registry reported complete response of IM in 90% of the HGD patients after ablation using the HALO system22
-
The AIM-LGD trial demonstrated that 100% of treated patients had no evidence of dysplasia at 2 year follow-up, and that 90% had no evidence of IM23
-
A study showed that combining endoscopic mucosal resection followed by ablation can be safely performed and eradicate Barrett's containing HGD +/- early cancer24
-
Physicians at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam demonstrated that the optimal technique for circumferential ablation has evolved and there is a
significant difference in efficacy outcomes25
-
A U.S. Registry reporting on the use of the HALO90 focal ablation device demonstrated safety and patient tolerability (in both a community and academic setting) in 508 cases performed in 200626
